The Islands of the Cook Islands
The Cook Islands, comprise 15 islands spread across a vast ocean area, divided into the Northern and Southern groups.

The Southern group, more visited and developed, includes the main island of Rarotonga, the vibrant hub of culture, transport, and tourism, known for its lush mountains, beaches, and lagoon.
Nearby Aitutaki is famous for its stunning turquoise lagoon, ideal for snorkelling, lagoon cruises, and romantic escapes.
Other Southern islands such as Atiu, Mangaia, Mauke, and Mitiaro offer rich cultural traditions, limestone caves, and off-the-beaten-track experiences with warm community hospitality and unique landscapes. These are ideal for travellers seeking a quieter, more authentic Cook Islands experience.
The Northern group, including islands like Manihiki, Penrhyn, and Pukapuka, are remote, sparsely populated atolls. Known for their black pearl farming and untouched beauty, they are rarely visited due to limited accessibility, offering pristine nature and deep-rooted traditions.
Each island has its own distinct charm, but all share the welcoming spirit of the Cook Islands. Whether you're looking for adventure, relaxation, or cultural immersion, the islands together offer a unique blend of Polynesian culture and natural beauty.

Rarotonga
Rarotonga is the beating heart of the Cook Islands – a lush, mountainous island ringed by white sand beaches and a vibrant turquoise lagoon. It’s small enough to drive around in under an hour, but packed with charm and adventure.
Hiring a car on Rarotonga is a great option for exploring the island at your own pace – just remember, it’s all about island time here.

On Raro, no building is taller than a coconut tree. You also won't find traffic lights or stop signs here. It's like going back to simpler times yet still being able to enjoy today's modern conveniences. And instead of being confined to an expensive resort, you're close to everything. no matter where you stay.
Muri Lagoon on the east coast is the star of the show, with its clear waters perfect for kayaking, paddleboarding, and snorkelling among colourful fish. You can even join a guided tour to swim with turtles. For a taste of local life, the Muri night market is a must. With sizzling food stalls, fresh seafood, live music, and craft stands, it’s got a great community buzz - low key and easy going.
Whether you're looking for lazy beach days, a hike into the lush interior, or cruising the lagoon on a glass-bottom boat, Rarotonga has something for everyone. The island’s warm hospitality, easygoing vibe, and mix of relaxation and adventure make it the perfect place for a laid-back tropical holiday, which is why it's so appealing to many Kiwis. It's not flashy – it’s just real, friendly, and full of simple island magic.

Aitutaki
Aitutaki is what most people dream of when they picture the perfect island escape. Think dazzling turquoise lagoon, swaying palm trees, and a pace so slow it practically hums. Secluded and romantic, 15 motus (islets) are sprinkled across this huge turquoise, sunlit lagoon.
Aitutaki is smaller and much quieter than Rarotonga, but that’s all part of its magic. Life here is about enjoying the moment, soaking up the sun, and forgetting what day it is.

Aitutaki's lagoon is the real showstopper. Jump on a lagoon cruise and you’ll visit postcard-perfect motus (islets), snorkel with giant clams, and swim in warm, crystal-clear water surrounded by vibrant fish. Don’t miss One Foot Island – it’s one of the most photographed spots in the Pacific, and yes, you can get your passport stamped there!
There are a few lagoon cruises in Aitutaki - just ask us and we'll make sure you're booked on one of the best ones - Vaka or Teking.
Hiring a scooter or bicycle is a great way to explore the island’s quiet roads, local villages, and little beaches tucked around the coast. While Aitutaki doesn’t have big crowds or flashy nightlife, you’ll find relaxed beachfront bars, friendly locals, and star-filled skies.
This is the kind of place where time slows down, the sea glows all day, and your biggest decision is which stretch of beach to chill on next. If you're after peace, beauty, and that true island feel – Aitutaki delivers in spades.
Getting to Aitutaki is a 50-minute flight from Rarotonga. It adds a bit to the cost of a holiday to the Cook Islands but you won't regret it - the lagoon is amazing and will almost certainly be the highlight of your Cook Islands holiday.

Other Islands
Southern Group – Cook Islands
The Southern Group is where most travellers to the Cook Islands spend their time – and for good reason. It includes the main islands of Rarotonga and Aitutaki, plus lesser-known gems like Atiu, Mauke, Mitiaro, and Mangaia.

Rarotonga is the hub, with flights, restaurants, markets, and a buzz of island life. Aitutaki, with its unreal lagoon, is all about romance and relaxation.
But if you want to truly get off the beaten path, islands like Atiu and Mauke offer raw beauty and authentic culture. Think jungle hikes, birdwatching, underground caves, and sharing stories with locals over a cup of bush beer. These islands don’t do big resorts – it’s about simple stays, local life, and stunning natural surrounds.
The Southern Group is your ticket to variety – a holiday mix of luxury, culture, and adventure.

Northern Group – Cook Islands
The Northern Group is wild, remote, and rarely visited – and that’s what makes it so special.
These coral atolls, including Manihiki, Penrhyn, Rakahanga, and Pukapuka, are scattered like jewels across the ocean.
They’re harder to reach (often by charter flight), but offer untouched beauty and deep-rooted traditions.
Black pearl farming is big in places like Manihiki, while Penrhyn boasts the largest lagoon in the Cooks. Life here runs on island time, and tourism is minimal – it’s more about cultural exchanges than cocktail menus.
If you're an adventurous soul looking for true isolation, oceanic horizons, and genuine Polynesian culture, the Northern Group will leave a lasting impression.
Just be ready for basic facilities, warm welcomes, and the kind of peace you won’t find anywhere else.
